The chorale preludes in this volume combine traditional classical form with stilistic elements of Celtic folk music such as dance rhythms, syncopation, and ornamental figures that give them a certain lightness. Almost all chorals, almost all of which are ecumenical, were composed for practical use. Therefore, they are kept quite short (about 1 min.) and mostly quote the chorale melody completely as cantus firmus in the approximate singing tempo. The playing technical demand is moderate. Indications about stops have been omitted, only the indications SW (Swell) and HW (Great) indicate where the c. f. is to be emphasized. The preludes are followed by accompanying movements.
